Abstract

Four complementary approaches serve to address the current challenges that the transportation system poses to the Pyrenees mountain chain. Given its location at the isthmus that connects the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe, the Pyrenees represent an orographical barrier to the flow of people and goods; they also represent an obstacle in political terms, due to the borders existing there, which have dangerous consequences for communication among the different territorial areas involved. Simultaneously, the Pyrenees are becoming more and more attractive for high valued activities, as it has valuable landscape that needs to be preserved. All this is incompatible with the fact of its main crossing itineraries having become heavy traffic axis.
