Abstract

The Catalan law 8/2005 for the protection and management of the landscape was approved on 8 June 2005. This law promotes the understanding and management of the landscape, and requires the drafting of landscape catalogues. The law also incorporates binding targets for the landscape planning process. Interest in how to manage the landscape, and in what exactly this may involve, has increased significantly in recent years, as have the efforts to disseminate landscape related information and research findings . Other member states in the EU have had an interesting and diverse experience in landscape management. Germany in particular formally initiated the process of landscape management with its law on nature protection in 1976. This law incorporated a holistic landscape ecology perspective. In order to provide a better perspective on the contents and context of the German landscape planning process, this article takes and examines in detail the specific case of the Landschaftsplanung Berlin. This plan is still operative, and is notable for its rigorous approach and strict framework. The plan is structured hierarchically, which facilitates the environmental assessment of a territory, as well as the identification of development objectives and the drafting and implementation of the relevant measures.
