Abstract

Plant biotechnology sensu stricto is one of the oldest and most used biotechnologies in history and at present. It is a paradox that is one that has to face one of the worst public perceptions. The plants that we use are the results of a strong selection pressure from human societies. At present we use biotechnological tools such as in vitro cultures to propagate in a clonal way varieties that have interesting properties of different species. We use molecular markers as an auxiliary tool for breeding and genetically modified varieties have been developed that are increasingly being used in a limited number of species. The challenges of agriculture in the next decades show that we will have to use any possibility that we menciomay have to maintain an acceptable level of food production in the less aggressive form towards our environment.
