An alternative gaze? Migrated women in TV3’s programmes on international migrations Authors Luciana Pontes Pinto Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Keywords: gender, international migrations, audiovisuals, Catalonia, non-fiction. Abstract The audiovisual representation of international migration in our country has been hotly debated in recent years, leading to sharp criticisms of journalistic practices in this respect. This has given rise to recommendations on the treatment of migrations and even to organizations such as the Committee for Audiovisual Diversity. Although these measures have not apparently worked any dramatic change in television newscasts, new ways of approaching migration have been observed. Along this line, non-fiction outreach programmes on the migratory experience represent an innovative trend in the television programming of both Catalonia and Spain at large. This paper considers the representations of migrated women in this type of programmes which have been broadcast on TV3, the Catalan channel that created an internal Diversity Commission in 2005.KEYWORDS: gender, international migrations, audiovisuals, Catalonia, non-fiction.
