Abstract

The globalization of audiovisual media is one of the characteristics of 21st century society. Before the use of satellite communications or the internet, there is an important and little studied antecedent in the process towards the globalization of audiovisual media: shortwave broadcasts related to the Cold War. This article studies this phenomenon and quantifies it. It analyzes the volume of shortwave broadcasts by the sixteen public broadcasting stations directly involved in the hertzian war between the two blocks, East and West, during the last ten years of the Cold War, from 1978 to 1988.
