Abstract

The global audiovisual market forces the European audiovisual industry to meet the challenges of internationalization. Whilst the emergence of new markets creates opportunities for European audiovisual productions it also creates the need for more economic resources to achieve world-wide distribution. What is more, the European Union, headed by the European Commission, wants to position Europe on the global stage as a key player and the European audiovisual policy is a good example. In this context, this paper analyzes, first of all, the position of European industry on the global stage. Internationalization objectives translate into actions on behalf of European institutions, among them actions regarding European audiovisual policy, which is studied in the second part of the paper. Finally, the focus is on new mechanisms for public funding in the audiovisual area. That is, the MEDIA International and MEDIA Mundus programmes.
