Abstract

Job cutbacks in journalism have resulted in a decline in quality and, consequently, a decline in media credibility. Complaints received by the Information Council of Catalonia indicate that the most common pitfalls in the media are neglecting to cite information sources, one-sidedness and lack of rigor in reporting, and a certain reluctance regarding presumption of innocence. Nevertheless, experts in the field maintain that the survival of journalism will depend on journalists respect for the principles and ethical values of their trade. Ethics is the foundation of credibility.
