Abstract

During the Second Spanish Republic, professionals in Catalan journalism became aware of the need for a change in their perspective. After years of journalistic, economic, and technological effort, Catalan journalists of the 1930s developed their own professional ophthalmology based on visibility and identity. Communication was becoming audiovisual from all points of view and Catalonia Catalan national identity was also an inherent and unavoidable viewpoint. The position of Catalan journalists regarding these ophthalmological changes was total and passionately defended. Day-to-day journalism exemplified this tandem of visibility and identity. Professionals reflected on this about-face in viewpoints that clearly fostered a better understanding and interpretation of the world and was one of the great efforts in Catalonia to provide a uniquely Catalan portrayal of reality.
