Abstract

This article begins with the influence Joan Fusters intellectual legacy on certain aspects of theories of communication and goes on to focus on the contributions to communication theory from neighboring areas of knowledge, such as literary theory, discourse analysis, and translatology. The subject matters most dealt with in Valencian production are the diversity of genres and discourse types from the standpoint of the relation between oral and written language, the metaphor and other figures of speech used for argumentative impact, models provided by media language, transformations characteristic of inter-linguistic translation or of the transmission of knowledge, the significance of communication stereotypes and, finally, the need for refocusing the historical perspective of events in social communication.
