Comparison between the journalistic production processes of the native and non-native digital press in Spain Authors Almudena Barrientos-Báez Juan Pablo Mateos Abarca Juan Manuel Barceló Sánchez DOI: 10.2436/20.3008.01.247 Keywords: cybermedia, digital media, journalism, newspapers, neurocommunication Abstract This study arose from the observation that the native digital press – that which has a web version alone – is catching up in terms of audience with the non-native digital newspapers – the traditional paper newspapers that have a parallel web version. This fact was highlighted by the daily El Español in March 2024 when it published data from Comscore indicating that this online newspaper is the medium with the most millions of unique visitors in pain. The report also pointed out that the ten most read newspapers in pain include 20 Minutos, El Confidencial and Huffpost, all of them native digital newspapers. In other words, new smaller newspaper companies with fewer economic and human resources are experiencing a higher growth in unique users than traditional newspapers. This may be explained in part by neurocommunicative factors. The main objective of this study is to analyze the production processes of the native and nonnative digital press in order to determine if there are similarities or differences that may be significant in any way when creating a final product that is more or less attractive to the audience and that explain in some way the fact that one type of newspaper is more accepted than the other. Both native and non-native journalistic companies were contacted arbitrarily to obtain the sample of participants. he media outlets thatresponded affirmatively were: eldiario.es, publico.es, elespanol.es, elindependiente.es, abc.es and cincodias.com. One of the most notable findings of this study is the fact that the native-media journalists’ job involves fewer difficulties and is more fluid in all respects, including schedules, relationship with supervisors and control over the product itself, among others.
