From postfeminism to neoliberal and popular feminism through content shared by TikTok and Instagram influencers between 2017 and 2021

Abstract

Influencers are one of the social media figures with the greatest ability to impact a wide audience of young people, especially women. By laying bare their intimacy to millions of followers, they obtain social status and visibility, becoming microcelebrities (Hearn, 2008; Marwick, 2015). Using social semiotics, this paper presents a comparative study of the contents published by two generations of female influencers between 2017 and 2021. The aim is to analyse the evolution of these influencers in order to identify similarities, changes and contradictions with respect to the representation of their feminine identity. The images, videos and texts shared by these young people contain implicit elements that illustrate the revision and updating of postfeminist sensitivity towards new paradigms  such as neoliberal or popular feminism, which presents a new conception of female empowerment based on individuality.
