Abstract

Linguistic communicative competence: teaching and learning to become linguistically competent in compulsory education. Linguistic communicative competence (LCC) means understanding oral and written texts and expressing oneself orally and in writing. It is a key skill required for learning and developing throughout life in our society. In this paper we address: 1. The LCC concept, its features and dimensions, and its relationship with different areas and subjects at primary and secondary education levels. 2. Some relevant aspects of new curricula related to LCC and the functions of language, and the languages that coexist in schools for knowledge construction. 3. Some teaching and organisational strategies that provide educational goals with practical ways for learners to gain experiences of sense and func- tionality. Taking account of the fact that, in the current education system, the principle of inclusiveness seeks that all pupils should attain this skill, it clearly requires processes of curriculum coordination and grading that are neither free from complexity nor unavoid- able in a democratic society.
