Significació de l'escola catalana en el segle XXI Authors Joaquim Arenas i Sampera Abstract Catalonia has its own education system, elaborated according to sound pedagogical principles over the centuries and consolidated in the late 19th century. According to the author, the characteristics of the Catalan education system include: a Catalan curriculum dispensed in the Catalan language; learning privileged over teaching, with school subjects used as pedagogical tools; a single curriculum taught to all pupils, whether of Catalan origin or otherwise, giving everyone the same chances in life; and a single pedagogical model for all citizens, accepted by an absolute majority, that aims to form citizens in the particular country called Catalonia. The author calls on teachers to go beyond professional competence and become aware of their responsibilities in forming citizens who are morally and intellectually sound and strong enough to face the challenges of the new Europe. Schooling in Catalan, a Catalan curriculum in the Catalan language that instils values of Catalanness: the Catalan pedagogical model is more valid than ever.
