Abstract

Learning language and writing is fundamental for the development of a person and it is a process that takes place within the interactions between child and adult. These interactions, beyond the teaching process, help children to create a link to their environment as a whole since they act as a tool of communication and socialization. Based on this idea, this paper presents a series of activities aiming to work on literacy from a comprehensive approach. Some of the main strategies include playing (letting children play freely and avoiding judgement of their creations); children’s literature (short stories are a great resource for working on important aspects of development such as imagination – changing the role of characters, creating new endings, etc.); and arts and crafts (which foster expressive freedom and creativity through materials of different colours, forms and textures). The proposals which are presented are a sample of different ways of working on creativity while enhancing the development of students' personalities and autonomy, as well as their spontaneity and ability to communicate.
