Abstract

This article examines the idea of teaching universities based on an analysis of the pedagogical significance of the concepts of culture, science, research and teaching used in the discourse of two contemporary intellectuals: Francisco Giner de los Ríos and Manuel García Morente. In line with conceptual and intellectual history, this analysis aims to question the univocal relationship between signifier (word), signified (concept) and referent (reality or signposted ideal) of these key concepts in the works of the authors and, beyond this, in the historical analysis of the idea of the university. This analysis is still at an initial stage but could be a contribution to the political history of education, as well as being useful in the current pedagogical political debate surrounding university systems in the 21st century.

Key words: university, political history of education, conceptual history, pedagogical thought, higher education, teaching, learning.
