Abstract

This article has two clearly distinguished sections. In the first I analyse, in the most important works of 20th century Catalan lexicography, a very specific lexical field: the names of vines and grapes (technically ampelonims). Thus I evaluate the selection of terms to be found in the Diccionari Aguiló, Griera?s TrL, Alcover-Moll?s DCVB, Coromines?s DECat, and the DIEC; without forgetting Fabra?s DGLC. In the second part I suggest some modifications of the terms in the DIEC and, more importantly, propose the incorporation (including definitions) of new names, which I attempt to justify in both a diatropic and diachronic fashion. To do this study I used a specific survey of more than forty subjects which I did throughout the entire Catalan speaking territory between 1995 and 1998. I also used a systematic extraction of all known wine terms (more than 400) in all Catalan lexicography, as well as considerable documentation on parallels in other Romance languages.
