Abstract

A review of the life of archaeologist Josep de Calassanç Serra Ràfols around 1939-1940s. The text explains the difficulties and internal exile suffered by Serra Ràfols after the defeat of the Republic, occupation by Francos supporters and the exile in Mexico of Pere Bosch Gimpera, father of Hispanic archaeology and his teacher. The paper explains the political complexity of establishing new scientific relations between Catalonia, Spain and other countries after 1939 and after the Second World War. Emphasis is placed on the creation of the Comisaría Provincial de Excavaciones de Barcelona (Commissioners Office for Excavations of Barcelona Province) in 1945, the nature of this office in Catalonia as a patriotic, pro-Catalan network of academics, and on the resumption of contacts with the Permanent Council of the International Congresses of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences of Copenhagen in 1948.
