Poble Nou del Delta: a historical-geographical analysis of the colonisation of the Delta de l’Ebre in the 20th century Authors Neus Albalat Queralt Universitat Oberta de Catalunya DOI: 10.2436/20.1001.01.269 Keywords: agrarian colonisation, contemporary urbanism, Ebre delta, agrarian policy, Francoism Abstract During Franco’s dictatorship, a total of 286 villages were founded, distributed among the hydrographic basins of the major rivers and under the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture. In the case study, Poble Nou del Delta, was officially inaugurated in 1956 and initially hosted 96 families. These families were chosen from 227 applications according to moral and subjective behavioural guidelines. The result of the historical-geographical analysis allows us to establish a chronology of documented facts and oral and local history from the definition of the colonisable area as that between the mouth of the Ebre and the Ràpita up to the present day with tourism.
