Abstract

The article analyses the medieval origin of Catalonia, emphasising its complexity and uniqueness. It does not respond to any type of determinism and neither is it the outcome of a conquest or immigration. The birth of Catalonia marks the period of a domestic evolution. It is the construction of a collective identity as a response to a conscious process of a sociological reality arising from historical and geographical conditions. It is, therefore, an original construction, less in its form than in its precocity.
