Abstract

This report analyses the application of a set of prescriptive rules for the spelling of Catalan in the Catalan-language newspaper La Publicitat, which was published in Barcelona from October 1922 to January 1939. The normative standards set out in Catalan Spelling Rules were drafted by the Catalan grammarian Pompeu Fabra and ratified by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans between 1913 and 1917. Starting from a selection of particular issues related to the spelling of various consonants as well as tonic and unstressed vowels in Catalan, this paper inquires into the degree to which these Rules were actually adhered to by the newspaper and discusses certain disagreements regarding their application which arose due to newspaper production techniques on the one hand and the incipient public acceptance of those Rules on the other. This report focuses also on the Pompeu Fabra's position concerning the linguistic uses in La Publicitat.
