La multidimensionalitat de l'àlgebra escolar. Una proposta d'itinerari didàctic Authors Abraham de la Fuente Jordi Deulofeu i Piquet Abstract If we can help students understand the meaning of the algebraic symbols they use, we can teach themto use the language as a tool to understand and express general relationships, structural connections, mathematical arguments and, ultimately, to solve problems. Here we present a proposal for teaching algebra aimed at achieving a balance between the different conceptions of the symbols that students learn to workwith, through situations with diverse meanings that help them understand the relevance of the algebraic language, its structure, and fundamental concepts. The final goal is to be able to employ algebraic reasoning to solve problems. The ideas expressed in this paper come from reflections and conclusions that the first authormade during his doctoral thesis, which was tutored by the second author of the article. This thesis was entitled, «Construction of algebraic language in a problem-solving environment», andwas defended in November 2016 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
