Abstract

This article shows recent changes in international immigration in the province of Barcelona and specially its impact on its population structure. The number of foreign citizens has increased significantly during the first five years of the 21st Century, reaching an 11% of the population at the beginning of 2005. Immigrant population in the province of Barcelona is mainly young and male, coming basically from Latin America and Morocco, and more recently from Eastern Europe. Though they have settled in practically all the municipalities of the province, even in the interior ones that, up to now, were characterised by a lower immigratory tradition, immigrants continue to prefer to settle in the city of Barcelona and the other metropolitan and coastal municipalities.
