Abstract

The generalized and daily use of the toponyms makes that they can awaken curiosity and interest in sectors not necessarily specialized. The recreational approach to the names of place intends to attract the attention about rather informal items, but that they can contribute to bringing over and spread the toponymy for a more extense public and foster the interest in the knowledge of the environment. With this goal, some of the questions of the geographical names that can be considered recreational are proposed and they learn with examples of the world and, especially, of Catalonia. The characteristics of the toponyms can be singular or suggestive, in relationship with the structure, the form and the contents. The names of place could be names of people, common nouns that designate objects, foods, etc, made sentences and geolocated sayings, and finally, some curious numerical and statistical datum: the most frequent toponyms, the longest and the shortest.
