Touristic Gigantism and Urban Dwarfism in the Balearic Islands

Abstract

The insular condition has multiple consequences both on the biogeography and on the human activities that take place in islands. Biogeography has often used the terms dwarfism and gigantism to refer to some of these effects. In turn, their spatial effects can be partially reflected in economic activities and urban expansion. By focusing the analysis on the Balearic Islands, but contextualising such an analysis in the Western European Mediterranean, one may conclude that gigantism and dwarfism can work as a metaphorical account of the increasing Balearic growth, respectively: strong in touristic terms and weaker in urban development terms.
