Abstract

The inclusion of community participation in the processes of environmental planning and decision-making is an old requirement for social scientist and politicians alike. In this context, the research presented here extends on the possibilities and problems of some of these methodologies, taking as a sample eleven municipalities from the metropolitan region of Barcelona. This study was conducted during the first years of the implementation of 21 Agendas at the local level and uses a methodology that facilitates citizens participation in the processes of design and development of planning proposals. The main methodological aspects and the results of this study are analyzed in depth in this paper, focusing primarily on the territorial and community differences in relation to participation. It also provides a theoretical framework for the implications of such participation methodologies for geography and social sciences in general.
