Abstract

As a result of the Concordat of 1851, the Spanish bishoprics were divided in archpriestal districts. Lately, their total number has a negative trend, with 92 districts at the present in Catalonia. The criterion for the archpriestal districts division is based on the geographical structure, on the urban network and on the social perception of small scale regions. Because of that, it is of interest the comparison of the ecclesiastic division with the political organization. At the present moment, the Catalan government is considering 7 provinces in close relation with the historical division in bishoprics. In the same way, the small scale regions proposed keep a clear connection with some archpriestal districts. Inversely, the recent designation of Sant Feliu de Llobregat as the see of a new bishopric would not arrived without the previous election of this small village as a capital of a judicial district in 1834.
