Abstract

Fisheries, present and future. The exploitation of fish stocks worldwide shows a worrying state of overexploitation. In its scale, fishing in Catalonia shows similar symptoms. Over-fishing is a widespread and complex phenomenon related to the characteristics of the fisheries as a self-renewable natural resource and being part of an ecosystem and, therefore, subject to some unavoidable constraints of the dynamics of nature. Fishing is governed by technology, economy and market forces that, in the historical conditions that have occurred, have led to the current overfishing. The dynamics of the resource, the process of overfishing, the possible recovery, and the tools to achieve it are analyzed. We also analyze the future of fisheries, including aquaculture as a possible alternative, and environmental phenomena, in particular global warming, as future constraints. We conclude that actions are needed to properly manage the fishery resources, otherwise humanity will be doomed to a problem of fish supply.
