Abstract

The microbiologies and the changes of paradigms. Living beings surprise because of their diversity. The total number of current species has been estimated to be more than 30 million and we know that many more species have lived and have become extinguished. A great majority of the species that are now or have been on Earth are microorganisms. The science that studies microorganisms is microbiology. The ideas and advancements of microbiology influence everyday life and help to create new perspectives for the welfare of humanity. The interactions between humans and microorganisms have very important consequences that, either positively or negatively, affect our species: a) microorganisms are the main agents of biogeochemical cycles of elements in the biosphere and the main agents of pollutants degradation, b) microorganisms are used in the preparation of a great variety of foods and pharmaceuticals. On the contrary: c) microorganisms may be the cause of infectious diseases and deterioration of food, materials, artworks, et cetera. Nevertheless, microorganisms contribute to the biosphere with more benefits than disadvantages. The extreme metabolic and ecological variety of the microbial world represents a wide, unexplored resource for biodiversity of great value for the future.
