Abstract

Tridimensional Science. The past few years have witnessed a tremendous explosion in the number of three-dimensional structures of proteins, nucleic acids and their various complexes. There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a revolution in molecular and cellular biology that is, in large part, being driven by structure. This latter has given rise to a relatively young discipline known as structural biology. Improved instrumentation and powerful computational tools have greatly accelerated the rate at which structural information is accumulating and has led to extensive structural databases. The next important steps are to understand and even predict the functional dynamics of native biomolecules, but also the intrinsic interactions of atoms to reactive changes in macromolecules, bringing about the possibility of intervention.
