Abstract

Molecular markers are the tools used by breeders in support of agriculture and that meant a breakthrough in plant breeding. As we have been exploring different types of molecular markers, and improved techniques to apply them, we select new plant varieties in a shorter time than using the classical breeding. These markers are used in plants to cultivars and the selection of heterozygous plants. In other projects of marker assisted selection they were used to select new varieties characterized to have some specific parameters of the plant or fruit. They are also used to produce the genetic maps of different plant species. In all cases you can use different types of DNA-based molecular markers such as RFLPs, AFLPs, SNPs and microsatellites.
