L'alè del mar: intercanvis oceà-atmosfera i canvi global Authors Rafel Simó Abstract The biosphere plays a crucial role in the regulation of the composition of the atmosphere. As a consequence, the biosphere contributes to the regulation of the capacity of the atmosphere as a reactor, radiation reflector and heat accumulator. As life does not only adapt to the environment but also modifies it, biogeochemical feedbacks are essential mechanisms in the functioning of the Earth System (which has the biosphere as a central component). Hence, in order to understand the response of the Earth System to the anthropogenic, rapid increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane, it is imperative that multidisciplinary studies on these feedbacks are carried out. Oceanic biosphere is the main agent for carbon secuestration in the long term, and for the exhalation of trace gases with a climatic role. Some of theses gases, such as dimethylsulfide, are known components of feedback gears between biosphere and climate. It is necessary, therefore, that we advance in the knowledge of the role that oceanic biogeochemical processes play in Earth System functioning, so that predictions of changes in global climate include the internal responses of the System, either stabilizers or amplifiers.
