Abstract

Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and the main reasons for the accelerated development and dissemination of bacterial resistance are the increase of the global selective pressure through inappropriate use of antimicrobials in therapy, the bacterial ability to select for resistant organisms, and the lack of development of new drugs as fast as bacteria can adapt to current antibacterials. The scientific community and drug companies are refocusing their discovery efforts in developing novel agents with new modes of action, adding to the classical antibiotic knowledge and detection methods the use of rapidly emerging technologies including genomics, combinatorial chemistry, high throughput scanning, and novel sources of natural products. This review summarize the evolution of the antimicrobial drug discovery process through the use of novel technologies in order to fight against resistant pathogens.
