Abstract

Tetracyclines are expanded-spectrum antimicrobial agents active against a great variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These type of antibiotics act by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, resulting in the inhibition of protein synthesis. Bacteria develop resistance to this kind of antibiotics mainly by two different mechanisms: 1) active efflux or 2) ribosomal protection. However, there are other resistance mechanisms that make these antibiotics unable to act against multiple resistant microorganism infections.
