Abstract

The survival of a scientific journal depends on several factors, among which competitiveness with other journals not only in terms of scientific quality, but also of cost-effectiveness and diffusion is crucial. Authors tend to submit their best articles to journals with the highest impact factor in their field of expertise, which are usually those more prestigious and always indexed in international databases. In the field of the life sciences, the major data bases are those of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), which lists journals and information in several weekly publications with the general title of Current Contents. For any scientific journal, being indexed in the Current Contents means being in the mainstream of science, which has a positive feedback in the journal itself. To obtain international recognition, journals published in non-English speaking countries must face great difficulties, and they feel compelled to use English as the language of communication. The main determinats of authors, journals editors and peer reviewers are commented on, as well as the strategies that modest journals can adopt to survive among those with the highest impact factors.
