Producció científica (SCI, SSCI, i AHSC) a Catalunya, període 1981-1998 Authors Lluís Rovira Jordi Camí i Morell Lluís Coma Abstract Preliminary data about scientific production in Catalonia coming from ISI databases for the period 1981-1998 are presented. According to the number of scientific documents produced, Catalonia is positioned above countries like Portugal, Greece and Norway and below Austria and Finland. The weight of biomedical research in Catalonia is very important in large measure, because of the contribution of the Health Sector, which is linked to Catalan universities. Next, a reflection on the proper use of bibliometric indicators is made since science is a varied collective activity depending on the knowledge area that is studied. This would be the case of the different bibliographic behaviour among researchers in experimental sciences, in social sciences and in humanities; it is not possible to compare the volume of cites among these different areas. The use of these indicators depends directly on the area of knowledge that is studied to the point that comparisons only are valid when they are with the same subject. The temporary analysis of the evolution of the scientific production in Catalonia shows us a global increasing rate in the number of articles, which is 197% whereas the number of citations has increased about 204 %. From 1994 a technical decrease in the number of citations, as well as in the number of cites is observed; this is due to how fast the databases are feed and to the fact that the most recent articles will receive citations several years later. The maintained increase that these data show will have to be analysed in future studies by thematic area, institutional sector, research centres and groups; perspectives that will help to better understand which is the real situation of science produced in Catalonia and which is its predictable future.
