Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to public health and has been recognized as a global emergency. Despite being overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains a crucial problem, with millions of deaths annually caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This resistance has enormous economic impacts, with health costs and lost productivity. The inappropriate use of antibiotics, both in humans and in production animals, contributes to this situation. Antimicrobial resistance is exacerbated by such factors as climate change and the global movement of people. The One Health program is key to this fight, integrating human, animal and environmental health to address antimicrobial resistance holistically. In Spain, the National Antibiotic Resistance Plan (PRAN) already includes the environment as part of its strategies, and Antibiotic Use Optimization Programs (AUOP) are implemented to improve the prescription of antibiotics and the monitoring of resistance.
