Abstract

This article presents a biographical sketch of Dr Roser Gonzàlez-Duarte, professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona (UB) and the first woman to receive the Catalan Society of Biology’s Leandre Cervera Award to the Best Scientific Career in Biology. This brief sketch emphasizes all the facets in which she has become a ref¬erence and a model for other women working in the biological sciences as a result of her rigorous research, innovative teaching and university management activity, and her active involvement as a social agent in the fight against rare diseases, as well as for her mentoring of other women scientists.

Catedràtica de genètica de la Universitat de Barcelona (UB), va fer la tesi doctoral dirigida per la doctora Roser Gonzàlez-Duarte i han sigut companyes acadèmiques durant molts anys, dirigint conjuntament diverses tesis doctorals. Dirigeix un grup de recerca a la UB i el Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras (CIBERER), que investiga les bases genètiques i el desenvolupament de teràpies per a la ceguesa hereditària. Juntament amb la doctora Gonzàlez-Duarte han cofundat DBGen Ocular Genomics, una empresa dedicada al diagnòstic genètic de malalties genètiques oculars. És membre de la Societat Catalana de Biologia (SCB) des de fa més de trenta anys.
