Abstract

From music in mediaeval times with the ancient troubadours, through the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Romanticism and the Post-Romanticism to 20th century nationalist music, nature is present from both an aesthetical, descriptive standpoint and indeed in terms of its functional component in the way it forges interplay with ecology, biology, medicine and psychology. In a widespread, prolific fashion, the titles of musical works and music itself have been linked to certain topics associated with nature, regardless of their composer. In light of this, rather than identifying a particular work or composer to award them a Nobel Prize in Biology for their contribution as a whole, it would appear to be more pertinent for the prize to be awarded to music and its composers collectively.
