Abstract

Bioethics is the systematic study of the moral dimensions of life sciences and health care. Although it has become a core competence in health professions, its impact on biologists has been relatively minor. The causes of this development are described, beginning with the context which propitiated its genesis, the moral problems posed by the use of new medical technologies and the abuses of research subjects, which led to the identification of ethical principles, published in the Belmont Report (1978). Ethics committees are institutional organs of multidisciplinary composition which ensure the application of these principles in human research, guiding and advising on moral problems in clinical practice. The procedure applied is deliberation, considering the arguments in order to make a decision. The identification of ethical principles to guide basic research in life sciences should be based on interdisciplinary dialogue. This procedure can help to avoid some errors and an excess of scientific thinking when, through partiality, it moves away from humanistic thinking.
