Abstract

As its name indicates, flow cytometry (FCM) is a technique that performs measurements (metry) on cells (cyto) in a flow system. A fluidic system facilitates the flow of cells one-by-one for single-cell analysis to be used in several multicolor applications for biology and for functional studies as well as a broad range of research applications. This technology elegantly combines the unique ability to rapidly isolate pure populations of cells or particles with a specific set of biological characteristics. In combination with modern molecular biology assays, experiments using very few cells or even single cells can be conducted to systematically uncover an organism’s biocomplexity at its basic functional unit level, the cell.
