Abstract

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics is an analytical technique for the identification and quantification of proteins which, thanks to advances in recent years, is now able to address complex problems in molecular biology and systems biology. Currently, efforts are being conducted to consolidate these applicating and to further develop in order for proteomics to have a real impact on the future of personalized medicine. New developments have significantly increased the synergy between proteomics and molecular biology, especially in the analysis of protein networks and their temporal and spatial dynamics. These studies have allowed the elucidation of certain mechanisms of action and their dysfunctions, the creation of models of response to treatment, the identification of biomarkers for patient stratification and classification, and the assessment of the impact of genetic variation on the observed phenotypes.
