Abstract ALBA is the newest third-generation synchrotron light source built in the western Mediterranean. Located in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona Province), it is aimed at producing synchrotron light for the visualization and analysis of matter and of its properties at atomic and molecular level. ALBA offers its analytical capabilities to more than 1,000 researchers every year both from the academic and the industrial sectors. It is managed by the Consortium for the Construction, Equipping and Operation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory (CELLS) and funded equally by the Spanish Government and the Catalan Government.
