The reduction of nickel chloride (II) dihydrate with lithium and a catalytic amount (5-10%) of naphthalene or DTBB leads to the formation of highly reactive metallic nickel nanoparticles, which have been used for the reduction of different functionalities (olefins, acetylenes, halogenated derivatives sulfonates, aromatic compounds, carbonyl derivatives and imines, and other aromatic compounds) and for reactions generating carbon-carbon bonds (homocouplings, ketone alkylations, and Wittig-type and aza-Wittig reactions). The same procedure was also applied to prepare nanoparticles of copper and iron, which have proved to be very active in reduction processes (dehalogenation, desulfonylation, and
reduction of carbonyl compounds and imines) and 'click'
chemistry.
