Abstract The reduction of nickel chloride (II) dihydrate with lithium and a catalytic amount (5-10%) of naphthalene or DTBB leads to the formation of highly reactive metallic nickel nanoparticles, which have been used for the reduction of different functionalities (olefins, acetylenes, halogenated derivatives sulfonates, aromatic compounds, carbonyl derivatives and imines, and other aromatic compounds) and for reactions generating carbon-carbon bonds (homocouplings, ketone alkylations, and Wittig-type and aza-Wittig reactions). The same procedure was also applied to prepare nanoparticles of copper and iron, which have proved to be very active in reduction processes (dehalogenation, desulfonylation, andreduction of carbonyl compounds and imines) and 'click'chemistry.Keywords: nanoparticles, reduction, C-C bond formation,click chemistry, copper, nickel, iron. Author Biography Miguel Yus, Departamento de Química Orgánica, Facultad de Ciencias e Instituto de Síntesis Orgánica (ISO), Universidad de Alicante Miguel Yus nació en Zaragoza en 1947, en cuya Universidad estudió Química (1969) y realizó su Doctorado (1973). Después de dos años de posdoctorado en el Max Planck Institut de Mülheim (Alemania) volvió a la Universidad de Oviedo, donde fue Profesor Adjunto (1977) y Catedrático (1987). En 1988 se trasladó a la Universidad de Alicante como Catedrático de Química Orgánica, siendo en la actualidad Director del Instituto de Síntesis Orgánica. Es coautor de más de 500 publicaciones, ha impartido más de 150 conferencias y fundó la empresa MEDALCHEMY S. L. para comercializar productos de química fina.
