Abstract

We analysed the influence of schooling on the linguistic reproduction of a minority language from an approximation of statistical data that appeared in two recent surveys about the knowledge, use and configuration of the linguistic identities of young people. It was observed that, while the educational system has a major influence upon the reproduction of knowledge about language, in both its spoken and written forms, it has a more reduced role in determining the linguistic uses of Catalan. It therefore has little or no influence upon the configuration of Catalan linguistic identity in young people. On the basis of these findings, we have analysed the possible reasons for this situation and proposed alternatives that suggest the configuration of the linguistic identity of young people as a future project.
