Abstract

The advantatges of accumulated heat units compared with FAO cycles for measuring maize cycle are discussed. From the evaluation of the different proposals for heat units calculation it is concluded that the NOAA (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, USA) method is the most suitable for our country.
Original information on accumulated heat units, average of several years, is given for the zones of Catalunya where maize is a major crop. Several practical examples are exposed to show how to handle heat units to choose the best hybrids depending on planting date and use of the crop (grain or forage).
Finally, commercial firms are requested to provide complemetary information on accumulated heat units required till different development stages (40 %, 35 %, 30 % grain moisture, for example) of their hybrids.
