Judgement and qualification: The need for specific technical training for Catalan domestic breeds assessment Authors Pere-Miquel Parés i Casanova DOI: 10.2436/20.1503.01.164 Keywords: domestic animals, contests, animal ethnology, livestock fairs. Abstract In this article, the author reflects on the need for correct morphological evaluations of the Catalan autochthonous breeds, thus differentiating morphological judgement and qualification. The first term, judgement, is based on a comparative ranking of animals of the same breed presented together. The animal which receives the highest scores wins, but this does not mean that it presents the best racial conformation. The second term, qualification, refers to the score given individually to a purebred animal, based on the criteria established in its breed pattern, which states different qualifications for the different body parts. Some thoughts are also presented on the importance of livestock competitions, as well as on the evaluation of equine hybrids (mules and hinnies). Lastly, the need to create a Catalan school of livestock evaluators and judges is highlighted. Downloads Download data is not yet available.
