The leaders in morphogenesis of the historical unversities of Principality of Catalonia Authors Joaquim Vallés Dalmau Universitat Europea IMF Josep Universitat Europea IMF https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3876-6365 DOI: 10.2436/20.3009.01.333 Keywords: History of the University, Tortosa, Tarragona, Solsona Abstract The three general studies and universities established in the Principality of Catalonia on the initiative of the Church (Tarragona, Tortosa and Solsona) were different from the communal university centres (Lleida, Girona, Barcelona and Vic) because their institutional morphogenesis demonstrated an unquestionably personalist leadership. However, this fact does not allow for the establishment of generalisable explanatory hypotheses, given that the biographical profiles of the three figures (Cardinal Cervantes in Tarragona, the Dominican friar Baltasar Sorió in Tortosa, and the knight Joaquín Setantí in Solsona) only have one sufficiently significant common link: their adherence to the Tridentine Counter-Reformation.
