The validity of the Popular University project: connecting past and present Authors Judith Quintano Nieto Universidad de Valladolid DOI: 10.2436/20.3009.01.330 Keywords: lifelong learning, adult education, civic education, culture, Popular Universities Abstract Considering the role that role that Popular Universities have played in adult education by promoting access to education, cultural promotion and citizen participation, this work aims to revisit the Popular University Project from a historical perspective to analyze the social, educational, cultural and political value of this movement. Its evolution, from the end of the 19th century to the present day, is studied to recover its memory and show the value of popular education in the different political moments that occurred in Spain. In addition, some keys to the future in terms of lifelong learning, participation and social transformation are pointed out, in order to build a project of Popular University of citizenship schools that respond to the interests and feeling of the participants, covering various perspectives and connecting the local with the global.
