Abstract

The representation of childhood on coins, banknotes, stamps, and other prints is directly linked to the political uses of childhood and the consequent public and social projection of a specific image or images of children. In this article we present a historical study of a collection of 74 commemorative coins minted by different countries around the world on the occasion of the International Year of the Child in 1979. We take the concept of childhood, transferred to the image or iconography embodied in numismatics, and work from a semiotic perspective, exploring the rich interplay of symbols and meanings that reflect, in the end, both universal aspirations and the specific cultural contexts of the issuing countries. In essence, through the iconography of childhood, these coins reveal not only commemoration, but also global awareness and action in favour of children’s rights; motherhood and education; linking childhood to aspects such as innocence, joy, cooperation, progress or protection, among other issues that will be raised throughout this text.
